Dear Editor, I cannot agree with Mary Kenny’s statement that some wars are not wrong (IC August 14).
To accept Jesus’ teaching of non-violent love of friends and enemies without any buts, one needs to remember that, as Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Saviour who had been promised to the people of Israel.
Tragically, not alone were most Jews unconvinced that Jesus was the Messiah, but the failure of Christians throughout the centuries has convinced the Jews that Jesus could not have been the Messiah. And tragically in recent times many of our young people too have lost faith in Jesus and his teachings.
Were we to truly trust in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the living God, we would not justify war, killings, abortion and capital punishment. Personal freedom and choice would be linked with an awareness of the right to life of others, from the moment of conception until death. Jesus suffered and died on the Cross; he suffered torture and murder. His resurrection was proof to the early Christians that he was the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. They believed that non-violent love of friends and enemies was Jesus’ way to overcome evil and death.
Yours etc.,
