Latest review confirms Savita’s death was not due to abortion – PLC

According to the Pro-Life Campaign, the latest hospital review which resulted in disciplinary action against staff at University Hospital Galway, further confirms that abortion was not a factor in the death of Savita Halappanavar (pictured).

Last week the HSE confirmed that nine staff members have been disciplined over the care provided to Mrs Halappanavar, who died in University Hospital Galway in October 2012. This follows an investigation by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) last year which found numerous “missed opportunities” in the care of Mrs Halappanavar, which could have saved her life.

Cora Sherlock, deputy chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign, said the fact that nine members of staff had now been disciplined “further confirms that this tragic case was never about the non-availability of abortion in Ireland at the time, but the mismanagement surrounding Savita’s care.”

“The tragic death of Savita Halappanavar was misused, massively and continuously, by major players in politics and media who were more concerned with getting abortion legislation over the line than accurate reporting,” she said.

“Those who pushed the distorted version of the story hardest from the start have never bothered to set the record straight in light of all the reports that have contradicted their initial presentation of the case. These journalists and politicians were happy to hard wire a false account of what happened into people’s minds and to this day they have no intention of disturbing their original narrative.”

Meanwhile, it has been reported that a solicitor for Ms Y – who delivered a baby by Caesarean section after being refused an abortion – has told authorities that she does not want to participate in her baby’s care arrangements. A care order was granted and the baby will remain in care for another two months.
