With Christmas jumpers becoming more and more popular every year, the selection in designs grows too. You can have whichever Christmas jumper design you like when you make it yourself. Create your own personalised festive jumper by getting crafty with an old sweater. Think of your favourite thing about Christmas, whether it’s the Christmas tree, the promise of snow, a holly wreath, robins or a gingerbread man and style your jumper with a motif of these. You could even make a special jumper for Advent with the image of an Advent wreath complete with candles.
For the green Christmas trees jumper you will need an old green cardigan or jumper, scraps of Christmassy fabric, scissors and fabric glue.
Create two templates for the Christmas trees, one slightly larger than the other. Take the bigger template and pin this to a fabric of your choice and cut out. Pin the smaller template to a second pattern and cut out twice. Lay the jumper flat on a work surface and position the Christmas trees in the design you want. When you’re happy, glue these in place with the fabric glue. Allow for the glue to dry completely before wearing.
Instead of patterned fabric, use green felt on a red jumper and glue sequins to each Christmas tree. You can always just cut out a large Christmas tree to fill the entire jumper. Or, cut out tiny trees from different patterned fabric and glue these all over the jumper for a festive wallpaper look.
For the snowman jumper you will need felt, scissors, embroidery thread, buttons and a needle.
Draw the template of the snowman onto some card. Cut it out and pin it to the white felt and cut around this. Cut a small triangle from the orange felt for the snowman’s nose. Glue buttons or beads on the body and for the eyes or stitch the eyes yourself. Cut out a top hat from a scrap of patterned fabric. Take the snowman and glue it to the jumper with the top hat on its head. Arrange small brown buttons on either side of the snowman for its twig-like arms. Glue snowflake sequins all around the snowman. Allow the glue to dry before wearing. For a comical look, cut out a piece of white felt shaped like a puddle and add the snowman features to this for a melted snowman!
