Marie Stopes bonus claims show abortion industry priorities – PLC

Claims that a major British abortion provider offered bonuses to staff who encouraged women to have abortions show that such businesses are more interested in profits than helping women, the Pro Life Campaign has said.

Calling for the public to made aware of such practices before even considering a referendum on repealing Ireland’s constitutional protections for the unborn, Dr Ruth Cullen said the revelations “highlight what happens when an abortion culture becomes acceptable”.

The revelations – which Marie Stopes have denied – were included in a report from Britain’s Care Quality Commission which found evidence of a policy urging staff to call and offer new appointments to women who had decided against having abortions, with this being linked to staff performance bonuses.

The report follows investigations last year when major safety flaws were identified at Marie Stopes clinics and doctors were found to be signing consent forms without knowing the women involved.

“Proponents of abortion talk about women’s ‘choice’ but where was the respect for those women who decided to go ahead with their pregnancies?  This report shows that many other factors, other than concern from women’s health and wellbeing underpin the abortion industry,” Dr Cullen said.

Pointing out that almost 200,000 abortions were carried out in England and Wales last year, Dr Cullen said the report “shows that abortion providers are not providing a service out of concern for women but instead are engaged in a profitable industry, an industry that often hurts women and always ends babies’ lives”.
