Galway City hosted a conference on ‘Marriage in Irish Society’ which was organised by a new group, Real Marriage. It focused on the issues posed by a redefinition of marriage, with the upcoming referendum on same-sex marriage.
Dr John Murray, of the Iona Institute, highlighted the differences between traditional and same-sex marriage. He pointed out that, if the State redefined marriage, it would be treating these differences as a kind of discrimination, doing immense harm to children, families and society.
Fr Timothy Bartlett spoke about the importance of the concept of nature and the natural law in defining marriage, and he emphasised the requirement to be sensitive and respectful to other parties in this challenging debate.
Ashley Nicole from the Love and Fidelity Network addressed the different qualities a father and mother bring to rearing a child.
