Crystal Swing star Mary Murray-Burke has said she was “shocked” after being told by a researcher on a prominent radio programme not to discuss her faith as it might “offend” listeners.
The singer told The Irish Catholic that she was keen to talk about a recent trip to Medjugorje on the show but was told “not to mention religion because it would offend too many people”.
Mary was subsequently dropped from the programme, which she declined to name.
“I have found, particularly with the bigger radio stations, that there is a reluctance to talk about the Faith which is very sad. The media love a big news story with a lot of drama but when it comes to religion they tend to pull back,” she said.
Faith
Speaking about the importance of faith in her family’s life, Mary said the success of Crystal Swing, the band in which she sings alongside her daughter Dervla and son Derek, was a result of prayer.
She recalled praying at Mount Melleray Abbey in 2010 that her children would be successful in the music industry, three days before receiving a phone call to go on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show which launched their careers.
“I owe our success and happy experience in the music business to what I think was a miracle that happened that day in Mount Melleray,” she said.
