Missionaries do amazing work – Kerry All Ireland champ

All Ireland champion footballer Anthony Maher has appealed to parishes to support the “amazing work” of Irish missionaries

All Ireland champion footballer Anthony Maher has appealed to parishes to support the "amazing work" of Irish missionaries on Mission Sunday later this month. The missionaries do fantastic work across all areas in developing countries, and they are respected and valued by the people whom they serve, he said.

They are for the main part feisty and spirited they really are a breed apart and without them, the lives of the people they serve would be so much bleaker.

The Kerry champís uncle, Fr Tim Galvin, is a Kiltegan Father based in Sudan since 1983, and he currently works in a parish in the new state of South Sudan. The footballer describes the work of his uncle and all missionaries as "simply amazing".

Challenging

"Missionaries continue to work in some of the most volatile, disadvantaged and challenging countries in the world and they do so selflessly and tirelessly. They work in education, provide help and care for people with Aids, they help to provide access to clean water, social justice programmes, human rights programmes, everything  right across the board."

The Kerry midfielder has thrown his weight behind this yearís ëmission month of October, saying that it is one of the most worthy causes in the country.

"We all appreciate that the people of Ireland are going through a very difficult time economically with lots of demands, but even a little means a lot in developing countries," he said.
