New book highlights Lough Derg miracles

Clogher’s Bishop Liam McDaid describes the book as “timely in bringing Lough Derg up to date”

A new book exploring the history, nature and value of St Patrick’s Sanctuary at Lough Derg was launched at the pilgrimage island on Saturday, June 4.

Speaking at the launch, author Fr Eamonn Conway, a member of the sanctuary’s pilgrimage season pastoral team since 1984, drew attention to the title of Lough Derg: Island of Small Miracles.

The miracles at Lough Derg, he said, tend to be miracles of healing of the mind and soul. Such healing takes place, he said, through conversations between pilgrims, the beauty of the island setting, the pilgrimage experience more generally, and especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Clogher’s Bishop Liam McDaid also spoke at the launch, describing the book, published by The Irish Catholic, as “timely in bringing Lough Derg up to date”. He praised Fr Conway for writing “beautifully and intelligibly” and commended him for writing “from the intimacy of his communing with a place he has come to know and love”.
