Cork Scripture Group has celebrated its second graduation with 19 graduates from the parishes of Ballingeary, Bandon, Bantry, Drimoleague/Drinagh, Dunmanway, Kilbrittain, Newcestown, Schull and Timoleague completing the two year Diocesan Certificate in Biblical Studies. The group received diocesan certificates signed by Bishop John Buckley of Cork and Ross, who was unable to attend, but sent his best wishes and said that he was delighted to hear about the success of the course.
The graduation evening was held in the West Cork Education Centre and began with a Liturgy of the Word followed by the presentation of certificates by Fr John Newman.
Cork Scripture Group was formed about three years ago to promote Scripture in the Cork area. Following a number of meetings it was decided to run a two year Introduction to the Bible Course.
The voluntary committee consists of Lorna Downey, Fr Ben Hegarty OP, Marian Mortell, Phil Mortell and Fr Sean O’Sullivan.
The course consists of four modules each of six weeks duration and covers an introduction to the Bible, an introduction to the Old Testament, the Gospels and the Early Church and the Letters of St Paul. The presenters include Msgr Ned Goold, Fr John Newman, Dr Jessie Rogers, Sean Brennan, Diane Corkery and Dr Kieran O’Mahony as well as all of the members of the committee.
A new Cork course (based in Scala, Blackrock) began in February and has just completed its first module. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the course they can contact corkscripturegroup@gmail.com
