Creighton was right to quit FG – voters

Renua leader Lucinda Creighton was right to quit Fine Gael, according to almost half of her constituents.

The Dublin Bay South TD sacrificed her junior ministry and a potential promotion to Cabinet when she voted against the Government’s controversial abortion legislation in 2013.

A poll by research firm Millward Brown for the Irish Independent found 46% of her constituents believed she was correct in her stance.

Another 29% said she made the wrong decision, while 24% said they didn’t know.

Cork to host Munster’s first pro-life rally

Large crowds are expected at the first ever Munster Rally for Life on Saturday, February 27.

Pro-lifers from as far afield as Waterford, Limerick and Clare are planning to travel to the rally, which will assemble at Cork City’s Grand Parade at 2pm, and will call for the continued protection of mothers and babies from abortion.

The rally will be preceded by Mass at Cork’s Church of Ss Peter and Paul, presided over by Cork and Ross’s Bishop John Buckley, who in a pre-election statement challenged abortion advocates’ attempts to have so-called ‘fatal foetal abnormalities’ designated grounds for abortion.

Tuam contributes almost €8.5m to Trócaire

In the past 20 years the Archdiocese of Tuam has contributed almost €8.5 million to Trócaire, the overseas aid agency of the Irish Bishops’ Conference.

Diocesan spokesman Fr Fintan Monahan described the sum as “staggering” particularly for a rural diocese of approximately 140,000 people.

“It is a sign of the wonderful generosity of the local people, even at a time of economic recession and a great commitment to their faith and outstanding care for the poor,” he said.

Fr Michael Molloy, Parish Priest of Moore, has been Tuam’s diocesan Trócaire representative for many years and is spearheading this year’s Lenten campaign.
