Cork bishop ‘grateful’ for UCC students’ safety

Bishop of Cork and Ross, Dr John Buckley, said that he was “grateful” that three students from University College Cork have survived a bus crash in Spain which killed 13 people.

The weekend saw a number of tragic road deaths, including a family of five in Donegal, an accident in Mallow which killed one man and injured seven, a light plane crash in Co. Longford, and two fatalities in Co. Westmeath and Co. Roscommon. Bishop Buckley said the events of the weekend served as a reminder of how frail human life could be and that the deceased in the various tragedies and their families “were very much in his prayers”.

Kilmore appoints new youth director

Bishop Leo O’Reilly of Kilmore has announced the appointment of Carina McGinnell as the new Diocesan Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

Ms McGinnell is a native of the parish of Denn and studied in Loreto College in Cavan before undertaking third level and post-graduate studies at the Mater Dei Institute of Education, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor degree in Education with English and a Masters in Religious and Education in 2010. Since then, she has taught in a number of schools in the area and is also very involved in her local parish.

Bishop O’Reilly said he welcomed the appointment “as it will build on the good work already undertaken with young people in schools and parishes throughout Kilmore and from which will emerge, through her work, a more structured and focused ministry to the youth and young adults of the diocese”.
