President praises Capuchins’ work

President Michael D. Higgins praised the work of the Capuchin community with the homeless at a 1916 Rising commemoration event at the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin.

During a service to celebrate the Labour founder James Connolly, President Higgins said the rebel leader and the founders of the Irish Citizen Army would be saddened to find, 100 years after the rebellion, that there were still “families short of the necessities of life”.

He said the Capuchins had helped those in need in 1916 and he had seen for himself during private visits how they were still doing so. “We live a fragile existence on this planet and we’re at our best when we care for each other,” he said.

€1m Moyross youth funding welcomed

The Parish Priest of Moyross in Co. Limerick, Fr Tony O’Riordan SJ has welcomed the news that the youth facility at the Bays Moyross, which is the main provider of activities and community based education programmes, is to get a €1 million makeover.

“This is great news for the young people of Moyross. For safety reasons we had to take a decision to stop using most of the building. Now young people will get the kind of building they deserve and where they can engage in a range of positive and developmental activities,” said Fr O’Riordan.
