Skellig Michael rockfall “deeply worrying”

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has described the serious rockfall which occurred on a roadway used by guides and OPW staff on the Christian monastic site of Skellig Michael as “deeply worrying”.

Grellan Rourke, the OPW’s senior conservation architect for Skellig Michael said that while some winter storm damage is normal, “the level of rockfall we have encountered this year is highly exceptional and, because of where it has come down, deeply worrying indeed”.

SVP welcomes moves to reduce school costs

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has welcomed the decision by the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton to require that school authorities adopt “principles of cost-effective practice” across a range of key areas.

The SVP campaigns for practical options to be made available for parents such as waivers, staged payments for various costs, book rental schemes, generic uniform options and other parent friendly approaches which are administered discretely and confidentially.
