Plays are highly recommended

Dear Editor, In the issue of January 16, Peter Costello reviewed At the Praetorium: Good Friday Revisited, a trilogy of one act plays’ by Sean Walsh, the former head of drama on radio at RTÉ. The review remarks “it is always difficult to see how plays might be in performance, but these are not (on the page at least) completely successful”.

We have a small drama group here in Saint John the Baptist parish, Clontarf, Dublin and they performed the longer of this trilogy of plays in three venues last Holy Week, in St Anthony’s church, Clontarf, Saint Brigid’s church, Killester and in All Hallows College. The play was very well received in all three venues. There were over 200 people present at the play in All Hallows on Wednesday of Holy Week and they gave the play a standing ovation, and there is an open invitation to put on the play there again sometime in the future. I would strongly recommend these plays to parish drama groups, especially as we draw near to the celebration of Holy Week. They will draw people into the mystery of the passion and death of Jesus in a way that will leave them deeply touched, which is what the evangelists themselves were attempting to do,

Yours etc.,

Fr Martin Hogan,

Clontarf,
