PLC petitions hospital boards

Thousands have sent formal petitions to hospital boards outlining their opposition to the new abortion legislation and urging board members to take a stance against it.

In the latest phase of their intensive efforts, the Pro-life Campaign (PLC) is calling on its supporters to lobby local hospital boards as part of a new initiative which aims to spread the pro-life message to every corner of the country.

Thousands have already sent formal petitions to hospital boards outlining their opposition to the new abortion legislation and urging board members to take a stance against it.

The initiative is part of the PLC’s new ‘Grassroots’ campaign, which aims to spread the pro-life message by educating and mobilising the Irish people.

PLC spokeswoman, Cora Sherlock, said the petitions are urging hospital boards to defend their ethos and challenge the new law.

“We know for a fact that there are members of hospital boards who are very troubled by the new legislation and the fact that it obliges doctors to ignore evidence based medicine and respect for human life,” she told The Irish Catholic.

Ethos

“Our petition simply calls on hospital boards to challenge the fact that they are being forced to abandon their ethos of respect for life and best medical practice. It is an outrage that doctors are being forced to go against their conscience and back a law that is not evidence based and is both detrimental to the lives of both mothers and their babies.

“We are going no further than simply calling on hospital boards to take a stand against this appalling situation. So far thousands of people have signed the petitions urging their local hospital boards to defend their ethos and challenge the new law,” she said.

Ms Sherlock also claimed that the year ahead will be “critical” for the PLC. “We have to decide whether we are going to sit back and accept the abortion law or unite in big numbers in opposition to what is a truly barbaric and unjust piece of legislation,” she said.
