Pope Francis is ‘biggest star you could get’ says top American TV host

American television host and actor Mario Lopez has described Pope Francis as the “biggest star you could get” ahead of his trip to the US next week.

The former Saved by the Bell actor said the Pope was “universally respected” and was considered by Catholics and non-Catholics alike as a “spiritual leader”.

“He’s provoked conversation and he sort of commanded attention. He comes from such a place of love with everything that is very inspiring,” the presenter said.

“His message is loving people and coming from a place of love. You can’t go wrong with that approach. It’s pretty powerful,” he added.

Describing Pope Francis as a “great individual”, Lopez said he hopes to get a picture with the Pontiff during his time in the US.

“It’s definitely on my bucket list, to hear him speak or get a blessing. A picture would be awesome. A selfie with the Pope would be the best ever,” he said.

The TV star, who is a devout Catholic, said he observes his faith in various ways – going to Mass on Sunday but also via his posts on social media.

“I am proud of who I am and what I am and being Catholic,” he said.
