Pope Francis proves to be an Irish bestseller

Bookshops unable to keep Evangelii Gaudium in stock.

A papal document penned by Pope Francis during the first year of his pontificate has made him an Irish bestseller, with bookshops unable to keep the publication in stock. Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) is now on its fourth print-run and has sold over 11,000 copies in Veritas bookshops around the country.

The chain of religious bookstores had initially planned for an official print run of three thousand copies for the Apostolic Exhoration, which normally only sell about 500 copies.

Director of Veritas, Maura Hyland said interest in the document was due to the “huge level of public interest in what Pope Francis is saying and doing. The sales of Evangelii Gaudium have broken records for such a publication,” she said.
