Primate’s ‘holy gust’ moment receives press award

A photograph from the installation of Bishop Donal McKeown as the new Bishop of Derry last year, won a prestigious award at the annual Press Photographers Association of Ireland’s competition.

The photograph by Margaret McLaughlin of The Irish News, titled ‘The Holy Gust’, captures the moment when a gust of wind caught the robes of Archbishop Eamon Martin to the entertainment of Bishop Donal McKeown and papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown at Bishop McKeown’s installation ceremony at St Eugene’s cathedral in Derry.

The picture was awarded second place in the “daily life and people” category.

The awards, now in their 37th year celebrate the very best of Irish press photography. This year, some 2,244 images were entered by 116 photographers from around the country. President Michael D Higgins presented the awards on Friday night at a ceremony in Dublin.
