Pro-life activist Niamh Uí Bhriain has expressed hope that a new US film, which depicts the reality of abortion through the story of former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson, will soon come to Ireland.

Speaking about the movie Unplanned, Ms Uí Bhriain said: “It will have a big impact because Abby Johnson’s story is so compelling. This is a reality that is having a major impact on audiences in the US.”

The movie, which details Johnson’s experience with her own abortion, has made €5.5 million in its opening weekend, exceeding expectations after the small-studio film received what producers felt was an unfair R rating and found its Twitter account suspended just before the film’s release.

“All the major TV networks, with the exception of Fox, refused to take out advertisements ahead of its release,” the pro-life campaigner said, “so the achievements have been hard won”.
