Dear Editor, I am delighted that Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si on climate change and care of the environment has got a positive response in Ireland. Hopefully, his call for action will be followed up at national and international level. However, caring for the environment must also involve care for human beings.
As the Pope said in the encyclical, “Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties?”
There is no point in building a better world for our children and grandchildren if we do not vindicate their right to be born into that world by protecting their right to life and safeguarding unborn children from abortion.
Yours sincerely,
Luc Desbonnet,
Roscam,
Galway.
