Dear Editor, The sadness surrounding reports on the Tuam mother and baby home reminds us all of our not too distant past. The public must consider the tragedy in the context of the country’s economic and social profile of the times.
One wonders if the fathers of all these ‘unwanted’ children should have input into the proposed inquiry, given that they have more to answer, than simply blaming the religious who inherited the expectant mothers on their doorsteps seeking shelter.
As a friend of many nuns, who dedicated their lives to serving Ireland’s education and healthcare development during the period, it would be wrong not to engage with all relevant parties.
