Rome has done a lot for us Catholics

Dear Editor, “In Monty Python fashion, what has Rome ever done for us ?” asks Sarah Carey (IC 23/10/14). Does she know that she is quoting a blasphemous film? The Life of Brian depicted a trivialisation and mockery of the ministry and crucifixion of Jesus.

Rome has done a lot for us Catholics, such as protecting the creed and doctrines of Christ from the heresy of every past age.

If the Church’s resistance to the narrow-minded obsessions of the arbitrary sexual license of this age constitute a deal-breaker, why not break communion with the Church of Rome? Why call yourself a Catholic at that point, and why write for a Catholic newspaper?

Yes, I too believe that Jesus would welcome those with same-sex attractions, but not on their own terms.

Yes, he welcomed the prostitute, but not her prostitution. You can’t smuggle that activity into Heaven, and the Church Magisterium isn’t so cruel as to pretend otherwise.

Yours etc.,

Mark Hickey,

Sandymount,
