Scholarships for Sligo summer school launched

Transition and fifth year students from Roscommon CBS took centre stage with their principal, Fiona Gallagher, and chaplain, Msgr Charles Travers, as they assisted Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin to launch a series of scholarships for the Star of the Sea Summer Schools for senior post-primary students that will take place in Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo, next June.

Bishop Doran thanked Roscommon CBS for hosting the launch event and expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST) for their support of this innovative faith development and religious education initiative and for their provision of two scholarships for students of ERST schools such as Roscommon CBS.

At the time of the launch 35 of the diocese’s 37 parishes had accepted a recommendation of the diocese’s Council of Priests to provide at least one scholarship to the value of half the cost (€370) for one or more teenagers.

The primary aim of the proposed summer schools is to enrich and deepen participating students understanding of the Catholic faith in a creative, fun and motivational way and to give participating students a deeper appreciation of an informed Catholic world view.

Currently there are six full scholarships on offer through the ERST, CEIST and Le Cheile School Trusts, two half scholarships through the Knights of St Columbanus and more than 35 half scholarships through the parishes of Elphin diocese.
