Sinn Féin does not represent majority on abortion – campaigners

Director of Precious Life, said the people in the North will oppose “any change in legislation”

The leading pro-life group in the North has said Sinn Féin does not represent majority opinion after the party voted in favour of changing abortion legislation at its Ard Fheis at the weekend.

A sizeable majority of Sinn Féin members voted in favour of abortion in cases of fatal fetal abnormality, which has been proposed by the North’s Justice Minister, and also supported the repeal of the 8th amendment to the Constitution which prohibits abortion in the Republic.

Bernadette Smyth, Director of Precious Life, said the people in the North will oppose “any change in legislation that would destroy disabled unborn children, or any unborn child for that matter”, and the group stated that Sinn Féin is “not a political party that represents the people of Northern Ireland”.

Sympathy

“We all feel enormous sympathy for mothers and families faced with the traumatic and distressing news that their precious unborn child has been diagnosed with a life-limiting disability. But mothers and families deserve much more than our sympathy.

“They need a professional support system in place; they need perinatal hospice care,” she said.

Precious Life and Donegal for Life held a prayer vigil outside the Millennium Forum in Derry where the Ard Fheis was taking place.
