Sisters of Nazareth order accepts Brendan Smyth abused children in NI home

The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry in the North heard this week that a religious order accepted that notorious paedophile priest Brendan Smyth abused children in their care.

The inquiry is currently examining abuse claims at Nazareth House and Nazareth Lodge. Senior counsel to the inquiry, Christine Smith QC, read a statement from Sr Brenda McCall from the Sisters of Nazareth stating that the order “accepts that Brendan Smyth did abuse children while they were in our care and continued to abuse some after they left our care”.

Thirteen institutions are being considered by the inquiry headed by Sir Anthony Hart, which is tasked with making recommendations to Stormont on issues such as compensating alleged victims.
