Cathal Barry sets out some surprising sources of nutrition
We’ve all heard that we should be eating more broccoli and blueberries, but superfoods aren’t simply limited to dark-coloured fruits and leafy green vegetables.
Here are ten examples of superfoods that may take you by surprise:
1
Dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. Studies show that dark chocolate can improve health by lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
2
Research is emerging to suggest that there may be health benefits associated with drinking coffee, from helping prevent diabetes to lowering the risk of liver disease. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, making it one of the healthiest drinks.
3
Moderate consumption of red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a reduced incidence of coronary heart disease. Its health benefits reside in resveratrol, a super antioxidant, which many nutritionists believe is one of the most powerful anti-aging supplements you can take. Along with red grapes and grape seed extract, red wine can fight stress when consumed in small quantities.
4
The antioxidants in balsamic vinegar improve nutrient partitioning so that carbohydrates get stored in muscle as glycogen, instead of as fat. Vinegar also moderates blood sugar and improves pancreatic function, making it a valuable addition to any foods that are high in carbohydrate.
5
Lentils readily absorb a variety of flavours from other foods and seasonings and are high in nutritional value. Lentils of all colours contain the highest phytonutrient levels of all legumes, making them protective against many stress-related diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure and inflammation.
6
Avocados are high in fibre in addition to being sodium and cholesterol-free. The average avocado provides nearly 20 essential nutrients, is rich in healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (such as omega-3 fatty acids), vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the full spectrum of B vitamins.
7
Ginger is abundant in anti-inflammatory effects that are therapeutic for the stomach and the joints. Studies have shown it can also ease muscle pain, eliminate inflammation, help with migraines and may even slow or kill certain cancer cells.
8
Eggs are packed full of protein, antioxidants and beneficial fats. Eating eggs regularly as part of balanced diet has been shown to increase fat loss, as well as decreasing insulin and inflammation.
9
Black pepper is packed with powerful compounds that reduce inflammation, aid digestion, prevent the growth of tumours and increase metabolism. Black pepper has also demonstrated impressive antioxidant and antibacterial effects.
10
Cinnamon is a spice that improves the removal of sugar from the blood. Lab studies have found that cinnamon may reduce inflammation, have antioxidant effects and fight bacteria. It’s also been found to boost brain function and cognition due to better glucose use.
