Time to challenge narrow thinking

Dear Editor, David Quinn’s article “Time for Church leaders to help students who have been silenced in our colleges” (IC 09/10/14), highlights the apparent intolerance for pro-life or Catholic views in our universities among student unions and the student body, and calls for Church leaders to support Christian students.

To be openly Christian in universities has never really been cool among students, but an anti-intellectual group think mentality to human rights issues has exacerbated the situation with a dogmatic left of centre, secular and liberal view point now becoming the new cool doctrine. Practising Catholics can be effective in challenging this narrow view point, but it requires an openness and honesty in all of us in speaking from conviction, while at all times showing a tolerance and respect to others.

But particularly with regard to promoting a pro-life position being conscious of the mercy that Pope Francis speaks of, to those whose views or life choices have ignored the rights of the unborn.

Yours etc.,
