Funny-man Jim Gaffigan has spoken of his family’s firm faith ahead of the launch of his new TV series chronicling their lives as Catholics.
The US stand-up comedian, actor and author said his faith is “very associated with the notion of mercy”.
“I understand that there is something greater than myself that does not judge me in a negative manner—or forgives me I should say. For me, being in touch with the idea that I’m not in control of everything is important. When I find myself frustrated, I have some distance from that idea I’m not in charge,” he said.
Gaffigan’s wife, Jeannie, who is executive producer of The Jim Gaffigan Show, said that being Catholic isn’t something the couple tries to hide.
“It’s just something that we are. We live in New York City where there’s all sorts of different attitudes and lifestyles. We don’t try to hide it… it’s just who we are.”
The husband-and-wife team say their Catholicism — with its daily prayer, weekly Mass and rosary recitation with their five kids — is such a part of their own lives that not including it in their work would be dishonest.
“It’s part of the story. We are just trying to portray our reality,” she said.
