An Irish Medical Missionary of Mary tragically died in Uganda on the day celebrations were planned for her 50 years of service in Africa.
Sr Maura Lynch became unwell while recovering after surgery she needed following a fall, she was admitted to Kampala Hospital last week. Four MMM Sisters and three doctors from Kitovu Hospital were with Sr Lynch when she passed away.
Sr Lynch spent 20 years at Chiulo Hospital in Angola and 30 years at Kitovu Hospital in Uganda, and was among the founders of the Association of Surgeons in Uganda. Those she trained now work in many parts of Africa. While receiving an award from UCD she quoted Oscar Romero, saying: “We are workers, not master builders… we are prophets of a future not our own”.
