Trial of Vatican accountant begins

Msgr Scarano faces court in smuggling case

Italy -The trial of Msgr Nunzio Scarano has begun. The former Vatican accountant faces charges relating to his alleged involvement in the smuggling of over €20 million last June. Opening arguments in the case were heard before a court in Rome on December 3, with the first witnesses set to take the stand on December 13.

The monsignor’s co-accused, former secret service agent, Giovanni Maria Zito, and financial broker Giovanni Carenzio, are being tried separately in a trial set to commence on January 15.
