Crisis pregnancy sparks legal action
United States The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has launched a lawsuit against the US Conference of Catholic Bishops for negligence arising from a crisis pregnancy case in the state of Michigan. The union filed its case on behalf of Tamesha Means, an expectant mother who experienced difficulties at week 18. The ACLU claims that, due to the hospital being Catholic-run, Means was not informed that an abortion was one path she could choose in response to her situation, which the lawsuit contends, was the safest choice she could have made. According to the ACLU action, the US bishops are to be held responsible for the woman’s “unnecessary trauma and harm” due to the ethical guidelines they offer to all Catholic health providers in America.
