We need leadership from our bishops

Dear Editor, Soon we as a country will be voting for or against same-sex marriages. The Church is very silent. There is little danger that many priests will be persecuted for the safe, wishy washy Gospel that is preached from most of our pulpits each Sunday. Where are the sermons on marriage? Where is the guidance from priests about the referendum? They should be speaking about the sacrament of marriage.

They should be speaking as Jesus taught us about marriage between a man and a woman as a sacrament and that the vows are made before God for better or for worse. Is the Catholic Church afraid of losing their parishioners? They have lost enough through the abuse cases. Are they afraid of thousands more leaving the Church?

We need leadership in the Catholic Church from our bishops. Get out of your ivory towers and preach as a follower of Jesus and stop hiding. Your parishioners need you now. We do not just want to see you on Confirmation days. No, get out and preach the word of God about this referendum on same-sex marriage.

Yours etc.,
Terry Healy,
Kill, Co. Kildare.
