Preparations are underway in Westport parish to host thousands of pilgrims expected to brave the climb up Croagh Patrick for the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage.
“We have been preparing for the last few months and are looking forward to it. It is always a high point of the parish calendar and for the people of the Murrisk and Westport area,” Fr Charlie McDonnell Adm. told The Irish Catholic.
“Our big concern is the weather. Pilgrims need to be aware that this is not a walk but that they are participating in something serious and should prepare correctly in regards to adequate footwear, walking sticks, food and water so they are safe up the mountain and return safely. The majority of incidents happen when people are descending with a sense of achievement and can become careless of their own safety.”
The Reek Sunday pilgrimage on Sunday, July 16 will include Mass on the summit every half hour from 8am-2pm and Confession from 7:30am-2pm.
