Why do we have to pay a TV licence?

Dear Editor, At a recent talk in Knock, a speaker mused aloud that given the ideological bent of Sunday newspapers, and most of the media in Ireland, it could be seen that we are complicit with evil by supporting them.

It is likewise for the TV licence to RTÉ given its constant churning out of liberal ideologies. Why are we forced to pay this tax? All we get is a news service which is propaganda and idle chat, comedy which isn’t funny and religious programmes which are atheistic and anti-intellectual.

Cardinal Sarah, at the recent Synod of Bishops on the Family, stated that there were two “apocalyptic beasts” targeting the family (and the world): Islamic fundamentalism and atheistic secularism. The unfortunate Syrians are fleeing one. Where do the Irish flee to? Fatima, perhaps! Where the Immaculate Heart will crush any nasties.

Yours etc.,

Declan Cooney,

Birr, Co. Offaly.
