It was a dream come true for many Magherafelt fans at the weekend as the O’Donovan Rossa club won their first Derry senior final in 41 years. However, winning captain Danny Heavron had a powerful intercessor in Heaven who he turned to in the final moments of the tight clash with the Glen.
“I was praying to Mammy, that she would see it through,” an emotional Mr Heavron said in a post-match interview. “It’s as simple as that.”
Looking back
The 30-year-old added that Sunday is a day he and his teammates will always remember. “In 50, 60, 70 years when you’re burying your friends, you’ll always look back on this day.
“This is a day when you’re sitting around in a wake house and you’ll say, ‘Can you believe we won a championship in 2019?’
“This is what it means to us boys,” he told BBC Sport Northern Ireland’s Thomas Niblock in a video that has since gone viral on the internet.
