World’s oldest nun marks major milestone

The world’s oldest living nun celebrated her 107th birthday with a special Mass at the Vatican on February 20. Born in 1907, Sister Alma Bellotti joined the Camillian order more than 80 years ago and has ministered to the sick since then. She is currently based with her community in the city of Lucca in Tuscany.

“God does all,” Sister Bellotti said simply when asked about her longevity.

The Mass attended by Sister Bellotti was celebrated at the Domus Santa Marta, enabling her to meet with Pope Francis during her visit. In her lifetime, the nun has seen no fewer than nine pontificates, though she steadfastly refused to be drawn as to who has been her favourite Pope.

“The Pope is the Pope,” she said. “There can be no discussion, he is the Vicar of Christ and must be followed unquestioningly.”
